Last week I attended an event at a gallery in Paris held by luxury publisher Assouline to celebrate contemporary jewellery designer Suzanne Syz's unique collection and publication of her first book, Art Jewels, a beautifully illustrated 200-page glossy coffee table hardback.
The jeweller was born in Zurich and educated in Paris before moving to New York City in the 1980s where she met legendary artists Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jeff Koons. Her relationships with these creative spirits greatly influenced her impressive modern art collection and acted as a catalyst for her unique jewellery designs.
She started designing eye-popping jewellery in the mid-1990s, inspired by nature, childhood fairy tales, her extensive travels and using extraordinarily vibrant stones along with her whimsical sense of humour, her sumptuous fine jewels don’t take themselves seriously.
Since then the Geneva-based designer has built a client list including the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Glora von Thurn und Taxis, the Archduchess Francesca von Habsburg-Thyssen and Michelle Yeoh.
Art Jewels is organised in alphabetical order with each letter representing something about her designs, style or inspiration. The original photography and imagery of her most magnificent pieces is accompanied by interview-style text by art critic Nicolas Trembley. Gorgeous to flick through and would make a lovely gift for jewellery lovers and art aficionados.
