Bangkok is a vast, crazy city, with over 8 million residents sprawling across 606 square miles of streets filled with traffic jams, mopeds, tuk tuks, food markets and bustling crowds. I really enjoyed our time there, but it was even more full on than I'd expected, especially after the peace and quiet of Phuket and Phang Nga. Our relaxing retreat from the hectic hustle and bustle was the beautiful 5 star Oriental Residence in the embassy district.
We started each day with breakfast at the European-style Café Claire, ordering eggs from the a la carte menu, fresh fruit at the buffet and a couple of cups of Earl Grey tea. One afternoon after five hours of temples, Buddhas and palaces, we retreated to the fourth floor pool for a dip and happy hour at the poolside bar, relishing the breeze and shade. After three days in the Thai capital and ten days in Thailand, we were sad to leave our sleek, chic skyscraper haven in the heart of the city.
