A couple of weeks ago I headed east to try Shoreditch's latest foodie addition, the casual Italian restaurant and organic wine bar Enoteca Pomaio on Brick Lane, run by two young brothers and winemakers from Tuscany.
Marco and Lacopo Rossi also run the award-winning, eco vineyard Podere di Pomaio in the rolling Tuscan hills of Arezzo, and have teamed up with local sommelier Luca Degl’Innocenti to create a unique list showcasing an impressive selection of natural, biodynamic wines from all over Italy from small, indie producers. In fact, 90% of their wines aren't stocked anywhere else in London as the vineyards produce such limited quantities. The wine is pretty special, but the food is too: Francesco Mastronardi's short menu focuses on modern Italian classics - think craft charcuterie boards, bruschettas, daily pasta dishes, risottos, fresh vegetables and good quality, seasonal ingredients. We shared a few charcuterie plates including some delicious 24-month aged proscuitto, salami and croquettes alongside a beautiful bottle of Terra de'Barberi chardonnay. For dessert, we shared a gorgeous chocolate bruschetta, served with mouthwatering cocoa semifreddo and sprinkled with salt flakes.
The decor is nice too: simple white walls, modern artwork alongside vintage market pieces, and rustic wooden tables and chairs. Sound good? Head to the corner of Brick Lane for good food and good wine served by a small, friendly team passionate about quality produce. Saluti to that!
