I've wanted one of Bella Freud's iconic 1970 sweaters for ages. I've admired them on Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, Poppy Delevingne and the rest of the British fashion set, and toyed with the idea of the black, red - the two original colours - the baby blue, grey, pastel pink, or festive editions in metallic silver or gold. My boyfriend put an end to my indecisiveness with an excellent Christmas present: the classic, versatile black version, in the softest fine knit merino. I love it!
The British designer - daughter of the late artist Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud - created the first 1970 jumper after photocopying and blowing up the corner of a page in a book with the date on it, cutting it out and pinning it onto a black jumper, which reminded her of Patti Smith and the New York punk scene in the 70s. 11 years later, the cult sweater comes as a rollneck or round neck, with long sleeves and ribbed trims in 100% merino wool. The bold intarsia slogan gives a nice contrast pop of colour against head-to-toe black, and it goes with everything: I've worn it tucked into my leather Jaeger skirt, with black jeans and, as seen here, leggings. Horror, of horror: I'm wearing sportswear out. I turned 30 in May, and I guess what they say about prioritising comfort as you get older is true! These Nike leggings are super comfy, and I think they're elevated when paired with chic knitwear and tucked into over the knee boots? I wore this look yesterday - along with my new sunny yellow Zatchels bag and Kenneth Jay Lane silver hoops - for Sunday lunch with friends in Holland Park, after wandering through the charming west London mews and eyeing up the colourful houses. I'll take the blue one...
