Last autumn, we spent a lovely long weekend on the Costa Brava coastline in northeastern Spain for Julien's birthday, staying at the beautiful Hostal de la Gavina and exploring the nearby picturesque city of Girona.
We marvelled at the huge medieval cathedral, featuring the widest Gothic nave in the world and used as a filming location for the Great Sept of Baelor in Game of Thrones. Scenes from Braavos, Oldtown, and Kings Landing were shot here, from cobblestone market streets to narrow stairs leading to Pujada Sant Domenec, and the grand baroque Sant Feliu church. We walked around the 9th century defense wall, Passeig de la Muralla, around the old city, passed colourful houses and crossed the Onyar river on the red metal bridge, Pont de les Peixateries Velles, constructed by Gustave Eiffel in 1877 before he built the Eiffel Tower, pottered around the indie stores and bought a few accessories from the cool little boho chic shop, Ese O Ese.
As with every other trip to Spain, the food was great. We had tapas for lunch, seafood along the coast, shared plates of jamón and glasses of cava, and ordered ice cream at the Charlie and Chocolate Factory-esque Rocambolesc Gelateria set up by Jordi Roca, the experimental pastry chef and youngest of the Roca brothers, after revolutionising the dessert cart of the world famous restaurant Celler Can Roca - oh how I wish we were organised and made a reservation months ahead of our trip. Next time!
